Lisboa

Quick Takeaways

  • Download the Rick Steves audio walking tour to get the lay of the land

  • Have lunch at one of the booths in the Praca da Figueira square and be sure and get pastel de nata from Confeitaria Nacional across from the market

  • If you are there for a short time purchase the 24 hr bus/train pass (pic of it below) so you can get on and off with a swipe of the card. We bought ours from one of the small tobacco shops

  • Wander the maze of cobbled streets in the Alfama district in the evening to hear Fado music.

Portuguese pavement

Unfortunately, these tiled streets and sidewalks are in danger of disappearing. Not only can they can be incredibly slippery, there are fewer and fewer tradespeople interested in learning the backbreaking art of maintaining these sidewalks.

The Museu Nacional do Azulejo or Tile Museum is a must see and is located in the Alfama district where we stayed.

The word azulejo stems from Arabic roots, meaning 'small polished stone'.

Tile is everywhere you look!
